TikTok is testing a new tool that will allow users to choose how much AI-generated content they see in their feeds.
However, they won’t be able to block AI content completely.
This tool is an addition to the social media platform’s “Manage Topics” feature. This already allows users to control how much content they see on certain topics — for example, dance or food and drink — in their “For You” feed.
They can choose to “see less” or “see more” of different types of video, and that will now include AI-generated content.
Jade Nester from TikTok said that “many people enjoy content made with AI tools” and the company wants to “give people the power to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences.”
But when we’re watching content online, we don’t always know whether or not it’s AI-generated.
That’s also something that TikTok is taking steps to change.
The app already requires creators to label realistic-looking videos that are made with AI. That’s to prevent deepfake content featuring public figures or important events.
But these labels can be removed when a video is reuploaded or edited.
Now, the app is also going to apply an invisible “watermark” to videos like these so that TikTok — and other sites — will be able to tell whether or not content is AI-generated.
But TikTok insists that it wants to unlock AI’s “positive impact” and not just remove it from people’s feeds.
It said that it is investing in “AI creation features” for users, and added that it’s using AI to help protect the well-being of the app’s staff and users.
For example, it has been using these tools to block videos containing harmful content, so that these don’t have to be seen by app moderators.
It said that over the last year, human moderators have seen far fewer videos containing harmful content.
